A footing is a foundation of a structure that connects it to the ground, transferring loads from the structure to the ground. Volume calculation requires height, depth, and width.

Enter the depth, width and length of your concrete slab to calculate the number of cubic yards and concrete bags needed to complete your project.

A column is a vertical structural member intended to transfer a compressive load. For example, a column might transfer loads from a ceiling, floor or roof slab or from a beam, to a floor or foundations. Volume calculation requires a diameter and a height.

Enter the depth, width and length of your concrete slab to calculate the number of cubic yards and concrete bags needed to complete your project.

Concrete Calculator Formula

  • Determine how thick you want the concrete to be
  • Measure the length and width that you’d like to cover
  • Multiply the length by the width to determine the square footage
  • Convert the thickness from inches to feet
  • Multiply the thickness in feet by the square footage to determine cubic feet
  • Convert cubic feet to cubic yards by multiplying by .037

Here’s what the math looks like for a 10’ by 10’ concrete patio:

  • 10 x 10 = 100 square feet
  • 4 ÷ 12 = .33
  • 100 x .33 = 33 cubic feet
  • 33 x .037 = 1.22 cubic yards

Calculating, Ordering, Managing,
and Tracking Concrete Made Easy

Once you have calculated the required amount of concrete for your purpose, you are just a few clicks away from ordering the best concrete in the perfect amount from the ConcreteDirect app.

Ready-mix vs bagged concrete

Should I order concrete by the yard from a ready mix company or just use bags?

As a rule of thumb, if you’re working on larger jobs, you can look at ordering by the yard, otherwise you’re better off calculating the number of bags required and ordering according to it.

Bagged concrete works best for:

  • Setting posts for mailboxes or fences.
  • Pouring small slabs on sidewalks
  • Footings for walls, pergolas, decks, and more.
  • Repairing the walkways or walls.

Concrete by the yard is most suited for:

  • Setting up foundations for a house.
  • Large driveways, pool decks, patios, and more.
  • Commercial sidewalks.
  • Parking lots.
